We’re putting the spotlight on NotCo this week – a Chilean start up that’s embraced the challenge of inspiring people to use plant based alternative foods without sacrificing flavour
According to the FAO (Farming and Agricultural Organisation of the UN) the farming of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens etc. account for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To put this in context this is the second highest source of emissions, greater than all transportation combined. With around 70% of agricultural land being used for animal pasture, it’s also one of the leading causes of deforestation, biodiversity loss, and water pollution (The Worldwatch Institute).
NotCo is on a mission to give us more sustainable alternatives for our collective hunger for beef burgers, scrambled eggs and fresh milk which is having a huge impact on the environment. TheirNotMilk features pineapple and cabbage – 2 ingredients you perhaps wouldn’t expect to use to make a plant-based milk! Last year NotCo signed a deal with Burger King to launch the Rebel Whopper in Chile, a hamburger made with 100% plant-based meat that imitates the traditional Whopper.
Like Citizen Good, they’ve also used AI to discover growth opportunities and overcome blind spots with sustainability at its heart. “AI can be applied as a solution to so many problems in the food industry. We’re only beginning to grasp the reach of this platform.”
