The theme for Earth Day 2024 is a rallying cry for change—to slash plastic production by 60% before 2040.
It’s a goal which is crucial for the health of both humanity and earth. Plastic pollution not only impacts our oceans, our land, our wildlife, but also DIRECTLY affects our own health.
To help build hope and demonstrate that change is happening we’re celebrating 5 different initiatives throughout Earth Day week.
Take a moment to look around you—how many plastic items do you see? And how many of those will actually be recycled? Shockingly, it’s less than one in ten. That’s right, the vast majority of plastic ends up in landfills or worse, polluting our oceans and harming wildlife.
Today we are putting the spotlight on Site Zero, the recently opened plastics recycling centre located in Motala, Sweden. Despite Sweden’s stellar reputation for recycling, over half of plastic packaging still ends up being incinerated due to sorting errors. But Site Zero is changing the game. With the capacity to sort a whopping 200,000 tonnes of plastic annually—enough to handle Sweden’s entire household plastic waste—the facility is a true game-changer. And with an impressive 95% recycling efficiency for 12 different types of plastics, Site Zero is leading the charge towards a more sustainable future.
Site Zero is just the start. As we mark Earth Day week, let’s seize this momentum.
Together, we can reduce our plastic footprints and create a cleaner, brighter future for all.
Happy Earth Day!
